Latest report showing European working condition are slowly getting better
The European Foundations for the improvement of living and working conditions have released the latest survey results showing that on average there is a pattern of employment conditions improving throughout Europe.
While the pattern of employment shifts, gender segregation within some segments of employment still remains constant. However the survey has shown significant proof that more women are moving more into supervisory roles.
The proportion of workers who are contracting has also increased over the past 12 months.
Standard working time arrangements, a five-day week of 40 hours, worked Monday to Friday, is still the norm for most Europeans. The survey went on to reveal that on average one fifth of European workers are still struggling to achieve a satisfactory work life balance, a slight decrease since 2000.
The amount of money spent on employees for training has increased significantly between 2005 and 2010 showing further investment in employees. Fewer workers now feel their health and safety are at risk because of their work.
Alex Askew, Marketing Consultant at Danbro Take home pay calculator says "It's great news that businesses are now feeling confident enough to invest in employees and the improvement employment conditions is certainly a step in the right direction".
The survey also revealed that Europeans do not feel confident that they will be able to remain in their current job until the age of 60.

The Condition of the Working-Class in England in 1844 $3.99 This is an electronic edition of the complete book complemented by author biography. This booktable of contents linked to every chapter and footnote. ******************. The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844 is one of the best-known works of Friedrich Engels. Originally written in German as Die Lage der arbeitenden Klasse in England, it is a study of the working class in Victorian England. It was also Engels'' first book, written during his stay in Manchester from 1842 to 1844. Manchester was then at the very heart of the Industrial Revolution, and Engels compiled his study from his own observations and detailed contemporary reports. Engels argues that the Industrial Revolution made workers worse off. He shows, for example, that in large industrial cities mortality from disease, as well as death-rates for workers were higher than in the countryside. In cities like Manchester and Liverpool mortality from smallpox, measles, scarlet fever and whooping cough was four times as high as in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high as in the countryside. The overall death-rate in Manchester and Liverpool was significantly higher than the national average (one in 32.72 and one in 31.90 and even one in 29.90, compared with one in 45 or one in 46). An interesting example shows the increase in the overall death-rates in the industrial town of Carlisle. Prior to the introduction of mills (1779-1787), 4,408 out of 10,000 children died before reaching the age of five. After the introduction of mills the figure rose to 4,738. Prior to the introduction of mills, 1,006 out of 10,000 adults died before reaching 39 years old. After the introduction of mills the death rate rose to 1,261 out of 10,000. It is considered by many to be a classic account of the condition of the industrial working class. It was originally addressed to a German audience. The eldest son of a successful German textile industrialist, Engels became involved in radical journalism as a teenager. Sent to England, what he saw made him even more radical. About this time he formed his life-long intellectual partnership with Karl Marx. Excerpted from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. |

Condition of Work in Ethiopia $129.05 The terms under which people are employed and the conditions, under which they work as well as the availability of jobs in the market, can affect the achievement of social objectives such as the alleviation of poverty, promotion of economic and social security. This is because any unsafe working environment affecting the life of a worker, in whatever form, is costly to both the family and the nation as whole. Condition of work of construction workers in Ethiopia is found to be poor. This is mainly due to the poor employment relationships and lack of safety measures. Safety measures are non existent in the construction sites; therefore, workers are exposed to different kinds of work related hazards. Most of the injured workers did not receive compensation because of triangular employment arrangements between the building contractors, subcontractors and subsub contractors which obscure lines of liability. The Author of this book believes that this information can be used as a ground for further studies and intervention programs on the area of condition of work in construction and other industries of Ethiopia to promote the labor relations and to foster safety at work. The Condition of the WorkingClass in England in 1844 $28.59 From 1842 to 1844, German philosopher FRIEDRICH ENGELS (18201895) lived in Manchester, England, and witnessed firsthand the impact of the nations burgeoning Industrial Revolution on the poor. The Postmonolingual Condition (Hardcover) $118.29 Monolingualism-the idea that having just one language is the norm is only a recent invention, dating to late-eighteenth-century Europe. Yet it has become a dominant, if overlooked, structuring principle of modernity. According to this monolingual paradigm, individuals are imagined to be able to think and feel properly only in one language, while multiple languages are seen as a threat to the cohesion of individuals and communities, institutions and disciplines. As a result of this view, writing in anything but one`s "mother tongue" has come to be seen as an aberration. Beyond the Mother Tongue demonstrates the impact of this monolingual paradigm on literature and culture but also charts incipient moves beyond it. Because newer multilingual forms and practices exist in tension with the paradigm, which alternately obscures, pathologizes, or exoticizes them, this book argues that they can best be understood as "postmonolingual" that is, as marked by the continuing force of monolingualism. Focused on canonical and minority writers working in German in the twentieth century, Beyond the Mother Tongue examines distinct forms of multilingualism, such as writing in one socially unsanctioned "mother tongue" about another language (Franz Kafka); mobilizing words of foreign derivation as part of a multilingual constellation within one language (Theodor W. Adorno); producing an oeuvre in two separate languages simultaneously (Yoko Tawada); writing by literally translating from the "mother tongue" into another language (Emine Sevgi zdamar); and mixing different languages, codes, and registers within one text (Feridun Zaimoglu). Through these analyses, Beyond the Mother Tongue suggests that the dimensions of gender, kinship, and affect encoded in the "mother tongue" are crucial to the persistence of monolingualism and the challenge of multilingualism |
