Today's car is a very advanced machine. Long gone are the days when your mechanic would take the whole day inspecting the engine and other components in order to diagnose the vehicle's fault. With the installation of the car computer on most vehicles, diagnoses have become simpler and faster.

Most vehicles manufactured between 1992 and 1995 have an On Board Diagnostics I (OBD I) facility while those manufactured after 1996 have the OBD II. OBDs are defined as the electronic systems installed in cars to help in regulating and optimizing engine performance. This system however needs an auto scanner for the car owner or mechanic to be able to analyse the fault the car is experiencing.

So how does the auto scanner work? Auto scanners are first of all electronic devices that are connected to the vehicle's OBD system. The auto scanner is configured to read the car's Engine Control Unit; this is the car computer that was mentioned earlier on and which is connected to nearly all electronic components of the car. The ECU works as to detect the engine's problems and then it generates and displays an error code for that problem. When the auto scanner is connected to the OBD system, it deciphers the error code registered by the ECU and translates it to a language the human being can understand. This information is read via the screen on the auto scanner. Auto scanners thus help technicians to quickly know what needs to be done to rectify the problem in the car.

There are very many versions of auto scanners and they also vary in price, size and capability. Some auto scanners need a laptop in order to display the error code information while others are handheld and are popular with car owners and part time mechanics. It is important to note that auto scanners are slightly different from OBD readers as they offer more information and have extra capabilities.

It is wise to get some training on using an auto scanner since this is not your everyday plug-and-play device. Some auto scanners are self powered while others require an external source such as the cigarette lighter power source. The training will help you know how to use the auto scanner to clear the error codes the OBD is displaying; constant flashing of the error codes via the OBD can be a distraction to the driver especially while driving at night.

You also ought to know that there are different auto scanners for OBD I and OBD II since OBD I has a different connection portal from that of OBD II. This is however solved via an adaptor which is used to connect OBD II auto scanners to OBD I systems.
