HP Officejet 6500 All-In-One Ink Review
HP's latest OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One printer includes photo printing, a comprehensive fax facility, duplex printing and a wireless connection and can be bought for around £130.
The OfficeJet 6500 comes in HP's current black and white business inkjet livery. There is a two-line, backlit, mono, LCD screen that provides sufficient feedback for most uses. Under the control panel is the machine's only feed tray, which can take up to 250 sheets of plain paper or glossy paper for photo prints. Printed documents are fed to a tray directly above the input tray. Media slots take MMC/SD xD and MS/Duomedia cards. Ethernet, USB and wireless connectors are provided at the rear of the machine.
Setting up the HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One in a network was straightforward. Just connect the USB cable and run the automated installation program from the provided disc.
In speed tests the HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One printed plain text at a speed of 12 pages per minute (ppm) and its colour output was 3 ppm, reasonable speeds but well short of HP's advertised speeds of 32 ppm for monochrome and 31 ppm for graphics.
The HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One's photo quality was poor; photos appeared overexposed with a blue/green overcast and some prints were smudged. Graphics output is a strong point, with eye-catching colours, solid fills and smooth gradients. Fonts were easily readable and well formed.
The HP OfficeJet 6500 printer cartridges include two sizes of black; the CD971AE which is rated at 420 pages and the high yield CD957AE which is rated at 1,200 pages. The three colour cartridges, CD972AE cyan, CD973AE magenta and CD974AE yellow are rated at 700 pages each.
The 6500's other functions; scanning, faxing and copying all worked well and could be controlled either from the machines control panel or from the programs you are working with. A one year limited warranty is also included.
The HP OfficeJet Wireless 6500 All-In-One offers fast wireless speeds, good document print quality, a high-capacity paper tray, and an attractive, fairly compact design. The only really disappointing thing about it is the poor quality of photo prints.
