Apart from this usage and size based differentiation, the barcode printers can be divided into two types based on the printing method. One type uses thermal printing method and the other type works on thermal transfer method.

In thermal printing, the black lines of barcode in specified sequence are printed due to reaction of thermal paper which takes place when heat is applied to the print head. While in thermal transfer the ribbon is used to transfer the ink to print the barcode on paper.

The usage pattern is one key factor to decide the type of barcode printers in different businesses. An industrial barcode printer is suitable for large manufacturing or warehousing setups because they require bulk quantity in short duration. Similarly for small offices or retails shops the use of “small office barcode printer” is preferred, due to limited requirements. For any type of quick labeling needs portable barcode printers are used, where very few labels are to be printed.
