Laser Printer Advantages and Disadvantages

A laser printer is a common type of personal computer printer that rapidly produces high quality text and graphics on plain paper. As with digital duplicators and multifunction printers (MFPs), laser printers use a xerographic printing process. But they differ from parallel duplicators in which the image is produced by the direct scan. It uses a non-impact duplicator technology. Laser beam drags the document on a selenium-coated drum When a document is sent to the printer, a by using electrical charges. When the drum is charged it is rolled in toner that is a dry powder type of ink. The toner sticks to the charged image on the drum. After this the toner is shifted onto a piece of paper and merged to the paper with heat and pressure. The electrical charge is removed as the document is printed from the drum and then the excess toner is collected. Most of the laser printers print only in black and white. A color laser printer is up to 10 times more expensive than a black and white laser printer.

 

IBM invented the first laser printer in 1975 for use with its central processor computers. In 1984, Hewlett-Packard overturned laser-printing technology with its first Laser Jet, a fast, compact, and dependable printer that could be afforded by personal computer users. Now the quality of laser computers is increased and prices are decreased. Hewlett Packard continues to be the topping producer with competitors including Lexmark, Okidata, and Xerox.

 

There are a number of dissimilarities between a laser and an inject printer. The toner or ink that is used in a laser printer is dry that is wet in an inject printer. An inkjet printer is about ten times more expensive to operate than a laser printer because ink needs replenishing more frequently in it. The printed paper from an inkjet printer will blur if wet, but it does not happen with document of laser printer. Both types of printer operate softly and allow typefaces to be added by using font cartridges or installing soft fonts. An inkjet printer is sufficient for your minimal printing needs. But if your printing intensity is high, then you have to buy a laser printer

 

These are some important features that can be proved helpful while buying a printer:

 

•              Personal laser printers are sufficient for printing almost 200 pages per week. These are low priced printers. They can print up to eight pages per minute. If an average of 1000 pages per week is needed then a workgroup printer is needed. These printers print up to 24 ppm. Production printers are needed for printing 50,000 or more pages per week.

•              The standard resolution is 600 dots-per-inch in most laser printers today. A high-end production printer may have a resolution of 2400 dpi. Some laser printers also use a resolution of 300 dpi. If you purchase a printer with 300 dpi, be sure it has RET.

•              When shopping for a laser printer, Paper handling is important. Most laser printers utilize letter-size, cut-sheet paper. High-end production printers utilize continuous sheet paper. Manual duplex printing is attained by changing the print options in the printer's  properties ,

•              A last condition in buying a printer is first paper out time and warm-up time.
